Ghetto Stories

Girls have a reason to smile after the new partnership between Aston College and Community Transformative Agents-COTA Kenya. Where slums girls are trained on Hair dressing with an objective of being self-reliant. This training will give them knowledge and skills to empower them economically by creating new jobs which will prevent many of them from engaging in illegal activities/crime and thus make our community safe and secure.

The entire course includes the following;

  • Hairdressing training,
  • Computer Application Packages,
  • Business Plans, Entrepreneurship & Communication Skills training,
  • Mentoring during the training until they start their own job &
  • Counselling sessions.

The girls are identified from the slums of Kariobangi, Mathare, Dandora, Huruma, Korogocho and its environs. Then COTA identifies partners/sponsors/well-wisher to offset their fees at Aston College. The only requirement for the girls is motivation/passion in being a job creator

Majority of slums girls from the ages of eleven (11) have children, hence some drop out of school completely while only few complete their studies but perform poorly. The circle of poverty will never change when we continue applying same approach to our vices. It is against this back drop that we came forward to play our part of support a girl so that she will transform her entire community.

Meet Frida Juma, one of the student and a mother of one, has been so excited and trusts that once she will complete then her life will change for the better. “I like the way the teacher is understanding and teaches with love, once I complete then I will be better and fine-tuned to explore the job market,” said Frida as she does her practical with ease.

What makes this course stand out is other components added on the outline which include; Computer Application Packages, Communication skills, Entrepreneurship, Business plan, Mentorship and Counselling.

COTA Kenya, continues to call for applications all year round as intakes for the course is monthly. To apply, girls are encouraged to visit the office located on 1st Floor at Faulu Bank Building Kariobangi along Outering Road.
